Journal # 17: Baraka movie

I choose the scene of a monk on the street. The monk walk lonely on the stress to find help, and beg a meal or money from passengers. But no one care about his existence. People just pass over, talk and smile together without sympathy with the monk. When I watched this scene, I have two totally different emotions. First, I feel really happy with the development of human society. People work faster and more effectively with machine help. They enjoy prosperity and higher living standards. However, I felt this life is not completely happy and fair. I felt how empty and cold relationship between people is. People in the modern life become increasingly standoffish and apathy, and moral values are gradually forgotten. This scene reminds me that don't just think about myself, open your heart to feel love from people around me. Life is sacred and precious; treat all things with respect; care and be compassionate with all people we have chance to meet in our life because they are presents of life.

Journal # 16

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."
I think the quote would like to show us don't give up, just keep going even you do not work so well. When I read this quote, I feel hopeful and optimistic. Although we do something slowly and ineffectively, if we are patient and devote our efforts to it, we can be successful. Through the quote, the author brings us light and hopeful scenes.

Journal # 14

Dear my loved parents:
It's a long time no see you, and I really miss you a lot. I'm still good; everything is ok. I want to let you know that I intend to get a job in America. I know you are so worried about I will live alone in America if I get a job here, but as you see, now I live alone very well, as well as I become more independent when I live here. So, you don't have to worry about it. Maybe I have to face cultural differences; however, I will try to keep our own culture. In California, there are a lot of Vietnamese people, and Vietnamese areas. They usually celebrate Vietnamese traditional holidays. Therefore, you can believe that I will keep our own culture. I know you will miss me so much if I work here, but I promise I will try to work hard, earn a lot of money and come to visit you on vacations every year.

I love you, mom, dad and sisters.

Journal 12

Lying. (2008). In W. A. Darity, Jr. (Ed.)International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, (Vol. 4). (2nd ed., pp. 523-525) Detroit: Macmillan Reference USA Retrieved October 22, 2010, from Gale Virtual Reference Library via Gale: http://go.galegroup.com.lib-proxy.fullerton.edu/ps/start.do?p=GVRL&u=csuf_main

The article give me some general information about how to detect lies. John Marshon, Harvard doctoral student based on changes in blood pressure to consider if people tell truth or lies. This method is better than chances to guess, but it's imperfect. After that Hagh Hartshorme and Mark May give a new method to detect lies. It's measuring character including demography of deciet, deceptive behaviors, and veracity.
Although the article don't give me enough information for my topic, it provides general information and makes me know more about some methods can be used to know if people are lying or not, especially basing on behaviors of liars.

Journal #11: How to Detect Lies

When I started to choose a topic for my research in composition class, there were a lot of ideas in my mind. At first I thought that my topic was marijuana, but then I have a good idea and I'm really interested. That is "Lies". All of us lie almost everyday in our life. Sometimes it's not a big deal, but sometimes it causes troubles in our life. Although, sometimes I lie, I don't wanna be a victim of lies. That's why I want to do research about "How to know if someone is lying?"
When I search information about my topic, there are a lot of interesting ideas. But I don't know where I should begin writing. It's really hard for me to organize the topic. So, if you have any idea about my topic, please let me know your ideas. Thank you so much.
